About Us

Decades of taxonomic expertise, applied to the waters we need today.

Built on more than 40 years of taxonomic expertise

MG Algal Labs is the environmental arm of MGPalaeo, an Australian scientific consultancy established in 1983.

We bring more than four decades of experience in identifying and interpreting microscopic biological remains — including algae, dinoflagellates, spores, pollen, diatoms and other microfossils — from complex environmental and geological samples.

That background gives MG Algal Labs an unusually strong foundation in microscopy and taxonomy. Our phytoplankton services build upon the same core skills that have underpinned MGPalaeo’s work for decades: careful observation, accurate identification, rigorous quality control and scientifically defensible interpretation.

Taxonomy is at the heart of what we do

Reliable phytoplankton analysis depends on much more than simply counting cells.

Correct identification requires an understanding of morphology, biological variation, preservation, environmental context and the subtle characteristics that distinguish closely related taxa. These are skills developed through experience.

MGPalaeo’s scientists have spent their careers working with microscopic organisms and developing specialist taxonomic knowledge. Our team includes researchers with expertise spanning fossil and modern algae, dinoflagellates, diatoms, phytoliths, pollen and spores, with experience ranging from routine analytical work to taxonomic research and the description of new species.

MG Algal Labs brings this experience into modern aquatic monitoring, combining established microscopy-based identification and enumeration with emerging molecular techniques such as targeted qPCR.

About MGPalaeo

Established as Morgan Palaeo Associates in 1983, MGPalaeo has grown into Australia’s largest specialist stratigraphic consultancy, with scientists based across Australia and experience on projects throughout Australasia and internationally. Its palynological zonation has become an Australian industry standard, reflecting decades of taxonomic research, quality control and accumulated expertise.

That same emphasis on scientific quality, traceability and specialist interpretation underpins our environmental work.
